True, look at the modern games getting praise like expedition 33 it's absolutely mid but amongst a sea of not great games it gets praised. If it released ten years ago no one would bat an eye
not all mediocre games are made the same. Some are mediocre becouse they didn't try, while others are mediocre becouse they did try and it didn't all work out great.

its the fault of AAA devs constantly sucking instead of getting some fucking soul again put into their games and setting aside weird reasons to make games significantly worse than versions of them from 20-30 years ago
Honestly I'd prefer a mediocre small budget game that trips over itself a few times while trying something new vs, like, another a new game where I get to climb radio towers. That doesn't excuse indie games that coast off of streamer popularity but I appreciate new things.
